Fossil & Rock Rarity Tier List

S–F fossil and rock rarity tiers for Dig All Dinos — layer depth, drop rates, sell vs combine value, and volcanic cave notes.

Last updated:

Fossils and rocks are the raw inputs of Dig All Dinos (Wrekt Studios). This page tiers them by drop rarity, layer depth, and economic value (sell price vs combine potential). Rarity tiers do not always match dinosaur income tiers — a fossil can be S-rare while the dinosaur it completes is only B-tier for passive Ambers. Use this guide alongside the tier list hub and fossils & rocks item page.

Rocks vs fossils

Rocks are dug from terrain layers; breaking them yields fossils, sellable shards, or junk. Fossils must be cleaned (manual or via Instant Clean) before combining into dinosaurs. Rarity here covers both the rock shell (how often it spawns) and the fossil quality inside.

Shallow surface layers teach the loop with common drops. Volcanic caves and deeper strata introduce heat-themed rocks, longer break times, and fossils that feed S/A dinosaur rankings.

S Tier — ultra-rare drops

S-tier fossils are the lowest-frequency pulls from the deepest reachable layers — often volcanic cave exclusives or event-weighted drops. Community consensus reports single-digit percent (or worse) effective rates without boosted tools.

What to do with S-tier fossils: almost always keep for combines unless you duplicate beyond museum needs. Selling is rarely optimal; check the target dinosaur on the dinosaur tier list before listing in trade chat.

S-tier rocks (when they exist as distinct nodes) mark extreme depth or secret pocket spawns. Prioritize shop upgrades that increase break speed or carry capacity before farming S-tier efficiently.

A Tier — rare but farmable

A-tier fossils appear in mid-to-deep volcanic runs at rates active players can target with sessions. They gate most A-tier dinosaurs and sometimes complete S-tier sets as secondary pieces.

Farm strategy: rotate cave routes with highest A-tier density, use Auto Sell on grey junk fossils, and reserve inventory for uncleaned A-tier pieces until you reach a cleaning station.

B Tier — uncommon standard drops

B-tier fossils show up regularly once you unlock mid layers. They fuel B-tier dinosaurs and act as sell fodder when you need burst Ambers for tools.

B-tier is the default mid-game inventory filler — clean in batches, combine B-tier dinosaur sets for stepping-stone passive income, sell extras after one complete combine.

C Tier — common layer filler

C-tier fossils drop frequently in early caves and upper volcanic zones. Fine for tutorial combines and low passive dinosaurs; outscaled quickly.

Use C-tier sells to fund first shovel upgrades — see items hub for economic loop tips.

D Tier — abundant / low value

D-tier fossils and rocks clutter inventory during long digs. Safe to sell with Auto Sell enabled or when capped before a banking trip.

Do not waste Instant Clean charges on D-tier unless you are speed-running achievement checks.

F Tier — junk and tutorial debris

F-tier marks starter-zone debris, broken fragments, and rocks whose fossils are strictly obsolete. Delete or sell immediately; never delay inventory for F-tier cleans.

Layer depth reference

Volcanic cavesB–A baseline, S at deepest breakpoints

Depth alone does not guarantee rarity — some pockets skew tables. Community maps circulate on Discord (official links).

Sell vs combine quick rules

  1. S/A fossil → combine toward listed dinosaur tiers.
  2. B fossil → combine once, sell dupes if inventory tight.
  3. C fossil → sell during tool rush, combine during museum push.
  4. D/F → sell or auto-sell; never manual-clean without idle time.

Patch and consensus notes

Drop tables are subject to hotfixes. A fossil demoted from A to B in a patch still looks rare in old screenshots — trust recent farming reports over nostalgia. This list mirrors community consensus, not leaked server configs.

After each update, cross-check game updates, then adjust personal farm routes. Pair rarity knowledge with platform controls so cleaning and selling stay frictionless on PC, mobile, or console.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does fossil rarity equal dinosaur tier?

No. A fossil can be S-rare while the assembled dinosaur is mid-tier for passive Ambers. Always check both the fossil rarity and dinosaur tier lists.

Where do S-tier fossils drop?

Community consensus points to the deepest volcanic cave layers and rare pocket spawns. Exact rates vary by patch and tool level.

Should I sell A-tier fossils for Ambers?

Usually no — A-tier fossils feed strong dinosaurs. Sell only if you are duplicate-capped and already completed the relevant combine.

How does Auto Sell treat rarity?

Auto Sell typically targets low-tier junk automatically. Rare fossils still need manual management — verify in-game settings after each update.

Will new areas change these tiers?

Yes. When Wrekt Studios adds zones or rebalance tables, rarity tiers shift. This page updates with community verification after major patches.
